20 Great Cars from Big Al’s Poker Run 2013

The 2013 Big Al’s Poker Run was held again, and as usual it was huge. A change of venue this year, it was held at Taylor Street Reserve, Victoria Park, a great location for the event and I consider this an improvement.

Here is a selection of 20 great cars from the 2013 Big Al’s Poker Run meeting start. A full set of 286 photos is available on the Brakehorsepower Classic Park Cars Facebook Album.

MG TC Owners Club Day 2012

The MG TC Owners Club of WA held its annual show and shine concours held at Matilda Bay, Crawley the 26 February 2012.

Weather was pleasant and 42 cars (not all TC’s though) were at the event. The location was well chosen, being centrally located and generally well serviced with plenty of parking and toilets nearby.

I’ve always felt the T series MG’s do look quite quaint and rather a fragile looking car…and on closer inspection they are fragile, hence TC = Take Care. I’m guessing these cars are in the category where fixing them is a very hands on affair and is something that can be done with fencing wire if the need arose (like in the outback…(Armadale)). This does have some appeal when compared to more modern vehicles (which break down also, by the way). And like the old saying goes, if it can’t be fixed with fencing wire, then it can’t be fixed!

I can’t see myself getting into a TC in the near future, so in the mean time I’ll just appreciate TC’s by looking only.

About this car:

Bought new in 1936 in Newcastle, NSW by a Mr Dudley who owned it until 1964 which was then sold and driven to WA by its then owner. It remained in WA up until it was bought and sold in the mid 1980’s and then went to Adelaide. The car went up for sale in 1998 when it was spotted in ‘Unique Cars Magazine’ and bought by the present owner who has restored much of the body work and installed a much needed supercharger (this heavy car really needs it). The car still has the original motor and gearbox.

MGB 50th Anniversary Day 2012

MGB 50th anniversaryThe MG Car Club of Western Australia held a 50th anniversary celebration day for the classic British sports car, the MGB.

There was a good turn out of cars, mostly MGB’s as expected, however several other types of MG’s were present at the event, including MGA’s, TC’s, TF’s and a rare MG SA.

The event was held beside the Swan River at Bayswater Riverside Gardens, which has previously been used by the club for annual events. This venue was excellent, being centrally located with plenty of facilities such as food, drinks and toilets nearby.

A great show put on by the MG Car Club of WA.

Big Al’s Poker Run 2012 – Part 1

Big Al's Poker Run 2012The 2012 Big Al’s Poker Run was on again with cars assembling at the Charles Patterson park, Burswood for the start of the run. Big Al’s is always well worth attending, even if you’re not participating in the run itself, but to checkout the 100’s of great cars rolling up to the event. I’m sure some of the rarer cars only get let out once a year by their owners, and that would be to Big Al’s Poker Run.

Cars were rolling up all morning, and at about 12pm, Charles Patterson park resembled a giant parking lot of classic cars, most of them being V8…a most amazing sight really!

Weather was pleasant albeit slightly hot and facilities such as food and toilets were readily available. Location of the event was central, and access was easy along Great Eastern Highway with plenty of parking for visitors. This would have to be one of the largest and best organised car events held each year in Perth.

Being a large event I took so many photo’s I’ve decided to split the coverage of Big Al’s Poker Run into 3 parts.

Day of the Volkswagen 2011 Western Australia

Day of th Volkwagen 2011The Volkswagen Club of Western Australia held its annual ‘Day of the Volkswagen’ at McCallum Park on Sunday 4 December 2011.

The weather was uncomfortably hot but despite this, there was good turn out of Volkswagen’s of all shapes and sizes.

This year’s venue was changed from the previous event location which was held at the Burswood G.O. Edwards park to the nearby McCallum Park (in Victoria Park) which I think is an improvement with easier access, better parking and more facilities. Plenty of food and drink was for sale and toilets were located within walking distance. The venue was centrally located which was also a bonus.

The event was naturally dominated by Beetles and Kombi’s, but there were a good showing of beach buggies, Type 3’s and Golf’s.

And now…the pictures of the Day of the Volkswagen!

Porsche Club Concours D’Elegance 2011

The Porsche Club of Western Australia held its annual Concours D’Elegance at Sir James Mitchell Park South Perth on November 27 2011.Porsche Club Concours D’Elegance 2011

There was great range of vehicles on display and some interesting models from the 1950’s which are rarely seen. As usual, the 911 models dominated the display but I was surprised to learn how many variations there were to this classic long running model. Early model 911’s were relatively uncomplicated compared to later models, though the body shape remained much the same for many years.

Location for the event was was chosen. For exhibitors and spectators, South Perth is centrally located and parking was easy for spectators. Facilities such as food, drink and toilets were available close by.

Overall a good show, hope to see it again in 2012.

Fiat Lancia Day 2011

The Fiat Lancia Club of WA held its annual Fiat Lancia Day 2011 on 27 November Sunday at the Perth Cultural Centre, Northbridge. There was an amazing turn out of around 70 cars making this one of the best displays for the club.

The location was fabulous, and I think this is an improvement over previous years venues of the parks in Burswood. Certainly this location attracted a greater number of onlookers and those passing by from the nearby art gallery and state library. Congratulation to the club on such great show this year.

Being centrally located, all facilities such as toilets and shops were close by. Parking and access to the event was also good, Sunday morning being fairly quiet in the city.

There was good range cars on display, from the vintage Lancia Lambda and Fiat 501 to modern vehicles. The most interesting for me was the those from the 1970’s especially the Fiat 124 Sport, my favourite model (actually many people’s favourite so it seems).
