It’s not every day you see a green Chevy Camaro parked. Looks very original and even has the Corvette steel rims. That’s one Heluva ride baby!
The 2013 Big Al’s Poker Run was held again, and as usual it was huge. A change of venue this year, it was held at Taylor Street Reserve, Victoria Park, a great location for the event and I consider this an improvement.

The 2012 Big Al’s Poker Run was on again with cars assembling at the Charles Patterson park, Burswood for the start of the run. Big Al’s is always well worth attending, even if you’re not participating in the run itself, but to checkout the 100’s of great cars rolling up to the event. I’m sure some of the rarer cars only get let out once a year by their owners, and that would be to Big Al’s Poker Run.
Cars were rolling up all morning, and at about 12pm, Charles Patterson park resembled a giant parking lot of classic cars, most of them being V8…a most amazing sight really!
Weather was pleasant albeit slightly hot and facilities such as food and toilets were readily available. Location of the event was central, and access was easy along Great Eastern Highway with plenty of parking for visitors. This would have to be one of the largest and best organised car events held each year in Perth.
Being a large event I took so many photo’s I’ve decided to split the coverage of Big Al’s Poker Run into 3 parts.

Yes, it’s a funny name for a car show but the name actually spells C.A.R.S (Classic & Awesome Rides Show).
The show was organised by the Monaro Car Club of WA and held at the Trinity Playing Fields, Waterford on 23 October 2011. Interestingly, it was open to any car club to display their vehicles at this show, and there was a good line up of Fords, Dodges, Holden and Chevy’s from other clubs at this event. It was generally dominated by American and Aussie muscle cars with an emphasis on Holdens and Chevy’s though I did see a VW Beetle.
The show was reasonably centrally located… in Waterford, albeit biased to South of the River, with plenty of easy parking on side streets and inside the venue also. Food and drink was available with a host of vendors selling related items and lots of toilets if you needed to go.
I’d consider this, one of the better organised car shows of the year, even with $10 admission fee, this was well worth attending and excellent value. I found the venue to be quite pleasant with grassed lawns and shady trees, with the cars well laid out for easy inspection and photography.

1956 Pink & Black Chevrolet Bel Air
A great display of Chevrolets was held at the Perth Esplanade on 16th October 2011 for the 100 years of Chevrolet anniversary. The event was organised by Chev Club of WA, 55,56,57 Chev Club of WA, Corvettes of WA Car Club and National Corvette Restorers Society.
There was an interesting collection of Chevy’s from vintage Chevy’s of the 20’s & 30’s to the popular 50’s style Bel Air’s and Impala’s and later models from the 70’s and 80’s. Quite a few Camaro’s and stacks of Corvettes made it to the event as well. Also, check out the photo of the only Corvair at the event with the ironically named numbers plates of NADER.
Unfortunately I arrived a little late (got caught up at the nearby French Car Festival) and half way through my photographic session, the Chevy’s took off to Mandurah. However despite this, I still managed to get quite few good Chevy photos.
I have to admit my favourites were the Gold 53 Bel Air, the 1960 2 door Impala and ALL of the 1957 Bel Airs!
This was very well organised event by the 4 clubs, being centrally located and easily accessible ensured there was plenty of spectators. It also coincided well with the the French Car Festival which was held nearby. No doubt many of spectators checked out both shows.

Chevrolet Corvair. This rear engined car, was quite a depature from the typical american styled compacts of the 1960’s. Designed to be a economy car to compete with many of the european imports at the time, it sold reasonably well. That was until Ralph Nader’s book Unsafe At Any Speed condemned the car due to the number accident and law suits the car had been involved in. After that sales declined dramatically.
Corvair engine bay, this is a turbo version. Maybe the spare tyre and battery should been located in the front of the car to assist with the weight distribution?

The 15th annual WA Hot Rod and Street Machine Spectacular was on again over the weekend August 27 & 28, 2011. The venue again was the Burswood Dome which has been the home for this event for quite a few years, although with talk of the Dome itself being subject to redevelopment plans, the future of the event here was uncertain. However, for the time being, plans for the Dome have been put on hold so the show is safe for another year, at least. With the uncertainty of the Domes’ future an issue, the organisers chose this year’s theme of ‘Destruction’.
Parking at the Dome was tight as it has been in previous years shows…but if you were lucky you could score spot near a classic car such as a Ford Galaxy, 56, 57 Chev or Mustang, but no luck this time for me, in fact it was way over the road for a parking spot.
The entrance to the Dome had a line up of American and Aussie muscle cars to whet your appetite for the main show. Though not part of the official show, these cars are certainly worth an eyeball, and is surprising to see what classics roll up…as there is a steady flow muscle cars arriving and departing all the time, and is well worth waiting around to see what cars show up.
Things I liked about this show:
- Awesome display of exhibitors cars & interesting display of spectator cars at entrance
- Centrally located and easy to get to at Burswood Dome
- Open over 2 days
- Show is under cover
- Food and drink available with plenty of seating & toilets
And things I didn’t like:
- The destruction theme was a little negative I thought and perhaps to those spectators who didn’t read the show guide, probably wondered what all the dynamite, hammers and wrecking balls has to do with hotrods and muscle cars. A little different from freedom type themes such as beach, 50’s, rock n’ roll as you’d expect for this genre. Not to mention the thought of any associated destruction next to some these works of art is almost sacrilege.
- The band, Fossil Rock whilst ok, I didn’t think got into the groove. I prefer more rockabilly, Hank Williams and early Elvis style…and a real double bass please!

1964 Ford Falcon XM. This Falcon is owned by Kristie Hudson with an engine that produces a staggering 1500HP. Engine is a 526 cubic inch Keith Black racing engine with a 14-71 Hi Helix supercharger, coupled to a 2 speed power glide and then to a fully floating 9 inch diff…Awesome!
Nunzio Ferraloro’s 1937 Ford Tudor “Slamback”. Features a 5.7 Chev EFI Vortec, Turbo 700 transmission, Ford 9 inch diff, Ford 4 wheel disk brakes.
Surprise! Under the bonnet of the 1937 Ford Slamback is a work of art…and I’m not talking about the engine!

BOSS HOSS BHC3 ZZ4 350 V8 Motorcycle. If you think having a Chevy 350 in your car is pretty good, imaging having a 350 in your bike! That’s exactly what the BOSS HOSS BHC3 ZZ4 has for an engine. The motor is liquid cooled and has an output 355HP. This is coupled to a proprietary 2 speed semi automatic transmission which also has reverse.
