Big Al’s Poker Run 2012 – Part 1

Big Al's Poker Run 2012The 2012 Big Al’s Poker Run was on again with cars assembling at the Charles Patterson park, Burswood for the start of the run. Big Al’s is always well worth attending, even if you’re not participating in the run itself, but to checkout the 100’s of great cars rolling up to the event. I’m sure some of the rarer cars only get let out once a year by their owners, and that would be to Big Al’s Poker Run.

Cars were rolling up all morning, and at about 12pm, Charles Patterson park resembled a giant parking lot of classic cars, most of them being V8…a most amazing sight really!

Weather was pleasant albeit slightly hot and facilities such as food and toilets were readily available. Location of the event was central, and access was easy along Great Eastern Highway with plenty of parking for visitors. This would have to be one of the largest and best organised car events held each year in Perth.

Being a large event I took so many photo’s I’ve decided to split the coverage of Big Al’s Poker Run into 3 parts.

Brockwell Memorial Run 2011

The annual Brockwell Memorial Run is not exactly a car show, but it’s a run or rally as the name suggests and a tribute to the late Maurice Brockwell who was a collector of fine motor vehicles and an active member in the Perth motoring community for a long time.Cadillacs lined up for Maurice Brockwell Run 2011

The run entails entrants meeting up at the at the Cannington Civic Centre car park for starting, then proceeding up the coast finally ending at the Motor Museum, Whiteman Park.

Though the event was open to virtually anyone with a car who wished to enter the run, most of the cars I noticed were ‘classic vehicles’ which was great to see. Many gawkers checking the iron here, including me! I managed to take these photos of the participating cars before they took off.

Proceeds of the event go towards supporting the Motor Museum of WA

Salvo’s Christmas Hamper Car Show 2011

This car show was presented by the Australian Street Rod Federation and Salvation Army as part of the Salvo’s Christmas hamper appeal at the Cannington Greyhounds Station Street carpark on 23 October 2011. The venue of Cannington Greyhounds carpark was certainly not the most visually appealing, however the quality of vehicles in attendance was surprisingly good.

Entry for spectators was a gold coin donation, whilst those displaying their cars made a donation of non perishable food. All proceeds going to charity.

The venue itself was certainly not central, thus this show would appeal to many of the south of the river car enthusiasts. The show had an impromptu feel about it but was otherwise well organised, with some food available such as a sausage sizzle and drinks. Also there were toilets albeit located some distance away at the the Cannington hall. Plenty of spectator parking was available in and outside the venue.

As mentioned above, the quality of the vehicles at this show were of a high standard, in particular I liked the light blue ’57 Chev, the ’53 Cadillac and the Dodge Charger R/T.

A good show, and hope it returns for next year.

Classic & Awesome Rides Show 2011

Classic & Awesome Rides Show 2011Yes, it’s a funny name for a car show but the name actually spells C.A.R.S (Classic & Awesome Rides Show).

The show was organised by the Monaro Car Club of WA and held at the Trinity Playing Fields, Waterford on 23 October 2011. Interestingly, it was open to any car club to display their vehicles at this show, and there was a good line up of Fords, Dodges, Holden and Chevy’s from other clubs at this event. It was generally dominated by American and Aussie muscle cars with an emphasis on Holdens and Chevy’s though I did see a VW Beetle.

The show was reasonably centrally located… in Waterford, albeit biased to South of the River, with plenty of easy parking on side streets and inside the venue also. Food and drink was available with a host of vendors selling related items and lots of toilets if you needed to go.

I’d consider this, one of the better organised car shows of the year, even with $10 admission fee, this was well worth attending and excellent value. I found the venue to be quite pleasant with grassed lawns and shady trees, with the cars well laid out for easy inspection and photography.

Check out the list of car clubs at end of this post that made the event.

I’ll definately be back next year for the 2012 show!

Japanese Car Day

With significant numbers of Japanese cars on Australian roads and quite a few car clubs devoted to various marques of Japanese cars, it’s little wonder the concept of a Japanese car day hasn;t been done before…and now it has!… on 16 October 2011 at the Midvale Speed Dome (WA).

This was an interesting display of Japanese cars from the various Japanese car clubs around Perth including individual exhibitors cars. It was a refreshing change to see some of older classic Japanese cars on display from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s as a contrast to much of the car show scene which is dominated by the usual, American / Australian / European / UK type cars.

This was event was put together by Automotive Events Management and this novel idea was to bring all the Japanese car clubs together for one big event, a show n’ shine followed by a superkhana.

In general, this was a good show with a reasonable turn out of vehicles and spectators. Faclities such food, toilets and plenty of parking was available. However, there are a couple of points I could suggest to make this event better for next time:

Location: Midvale Speed Dome probably wasn’t the best location for the show n’ shine section of the event. It was non central, and there was a lack passing traffic (vehicular and pedestrian) so the event virtually remains hidden. Quite often many spectators are those which merely passing by and stop to look. Compare this location to car shows held at not so far away Stirling Square Guildford, where there is plenty of vehicular and pedestrian traffic passing by which can easily stop and look. In addition the irregular layout of the grounds was not the ideal for this event, with some vehicles oddly positioned.

Admission price: At $15 admission for an average sized show, this was a bit steep. This certainly doesn’t encourage people to attend next year. The All Ford Day by comparison covered the entire Bassendean Oval and was only $10 admission and many of the car shows in Perth are free for spectators.

Lack of car details: Many of the cars didn’t show any year, make & model information which often spectators like to see.

French Car Festival

French Car FestivalThe French Car Festival was on again at the Supreme Court Gardens in Perth on 16 October 2011. Weather was fantastic and there was an excellent turn out of vehicles. The main French marques were all well represented including Citroen, Renault and Peugeot.

There was a surprise late arrival of some rather interesting vintage French vehicles such the 1935 Bugatti 57TT, 1924 Amilcar, and a 1926 Citroen B12.

The location was excellent, being centrally located in Perth CBD it was easy to get to… parking was a little expensive at the nearby car park but acceptable. The event date was also well coordinated with another car show event nearby, The Chevrolet 100 year Anniversary, at the Esplanade.

All facitilies were available with food and drink vendors and public toilets closeby. To top it all off, the view of Swan River was brilliant.

Most cars were well documented which was pleasing to see, as my knowledge of some of the more obscure French cars is not the best. Certainly it was good to see some of the Citroen D Special’s again, as these distinctive models are little seen these days.

 Bugatti Type 57TT Mechanical brakes
Bugatti Type 57TT mechanical drum brakes.

From the notes about this Bugatti TT:

“History
Driven by Earl Howe in the 1935 Ulster TT achieving third-place with the second fastest time at an average of 79.92mph the vehicle was then used for personal transport by Bugatti’s number one driver, Jean Pierre Wimelle. It was then sold to Perre Levegh(Bouillon) and driven to 8th place in the 1937 Marseilles Grand Prix

It was then bought by a Frenchman who shipped the car to the UK where he lapped the Brooklands racetrack at over 122 mph (195kph).

It was brought to Western Australia by Duncan Ord in 1938 who raced the car in 1939 for the Pingelly Grand Prix with the fastest time.

The vehicle also gained fastest time at Albany in the same year, as well as a lap record in Applecross and set a lap record Caversham. It was on this day at Caversham that the vehicle experienced an unfortunate accident on the racetrack.

It was then sold to Geoff Phillips and then onto Phill Hind who shortened the chassis and fitted a different body.

It changed hands again, this time to David Van Dal and then in 1957 it was purchased by the present owner, James Krajancich.

This is the only factory bodied TT car in existence. Two were specially built as TT’s by the factory. The other car’s original Stilvio body was replaced, another motor fitted and then sold as a production car.”

This De Dion was first found in 1940 in a chicken house in North Adelaide. The body was missing and many parts had been taken off. After several restoration attempts by different owners, the car made it’s way to Perth, where the present owner has spent the last 7 years restoring it.

Targa West Rally Car Display Langley Park

As part of the 2011 Targa West Rally, the Perth super stage at Langley Park saw a display of interesting historic racing cars and cars from other car clubs which was combined with the rally event on Sunday 28 August. Amongst the car clubs there were: Vintage Sports Car Club of WA, HSV Owners Club of WA, WA Toyota Car Club, Street Car Racing Association of WA & Triumph Sports Owners Association of WA.

Overall this was a very well organised and planned event by Targa West with a well-chosen central location that was quite accessible. In addition, it had plenty of facilities such as food and toilets provided for the spectators and competitors. Best of all, entry was free!

Raced in the Around the Houses in Albany in 1936, the Victory Grand Prix in 1946, Airforce Flying 50 in 1948 at Caversham race track. Last raced in Narrogin in 1954. Owned by the MacKintosh family since 1939. Restored by Bruce & Barry Mackintosh.

1928 Buick Replica                  A replica of the 1928 Buick as raced by Eric Armstrong at Lake Perkolilli (near Kalgoorlie). Unfortunately it couldn’t reach the magic 100mph to qualify for the Australian Championship at the 1928 event but did it compete in the Open Handicap race with an average speed of 75mph.

1928 Model A Ford Cactus             1928 Model A Ford. This model A is a replica of the vehicle raced by Ossie Cranston in the early 1930’s in Western Australia. Like many other race drivers at the time in Western Australia, Cranston was car dealer who’s racing exploits was an effective way of promoting his car dealerships. This car was nicknamed ‘Cactus’ and featured in many early hillclimb and racing events. The car was retired in 1932, and Ossie Cranston moved up to a more powerful Ford V8. Cranston retired from racing in 1937. This replica was built by Jack, Rodney and Graeme Cocks.

WA Hot Rod and Street Machine Spectacular 2011

The 15th annual WA Hot Rod and Street Machine Spectacular was on again over the weekend August 27 & 28, 2011. The venue again was the Burswood Dome which has been the home for this event for quite a few years, although with talk of the Dome itself being subject to redevelopment plans, the future of the event here was uncertain. However, for the time being, plans for the Dome have been put on hold so the show is safe for another year, at least. With the uncertainty of the Domes’ future an issue, the organisers chose this year’s theme of ‘Destruction’.

Parking at the Dome was tight as it has been in previous years shows…but if you were lucky you could score spot near a classic car such as a Ford Galaxy, 56, 57 Chev or Mustang, but no luck this time for me, in fact it was way over the road for a parking spot.

The entrance to the Dome had a line up of American and Aussie muscle cars to whet your appetite for the main show. Though not part of the official show, these cars are certainly worth an eyeball, and is surprising to see what classics roll up…as there is a steady flow muscle cars arriving and departing all the time, and is well worth waiting around to see what cars show up.

Things I liked about this show:

  • Awesome display of exhibitors cars & interesting display of spectator cars at entrance
  • Centrally located and easy to get to at Burswood Dome
  • Open over 2 days
  • Show is under cover
  • Food and drink available with plenty of seating & toilets

And things I didn’t like:

  • The destruction theme was a little negative I thought and perhaps to those spectators who didn’t read the show guide, probably wondered what all the dynamite, hammers and wrecking balls has to do with hotrods and muscle cars. A little different from freedom type themes such as beach, 50’s, rock n’ roll as you’d expect for this genre. Not to mention the thought of any associated destruction next to some these works of art is almost sacrilege.
  • The band, Fossil Rock whilst ok, I didn’t think got into the groove. I prefer more rockabilly, Hank Williams and early Elvis style…and a real double bass please!
